On Friday, January 16th, the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre (VSAC) threw a celebration for the people who make our work possible: our incredible volunteers. Simply put: we can’t do this work without you.

This special evening wasn’t just about saying “thank you.” It was about laughter, connection, and reminding everyone why volunteering at VSAC is so meaningful.

A Night of Fun, Gratitude, and Connection

The volunteer appreciation gathering was filled with joy, creativity, and heartfelt moments. Highlights included:

  • A warm video tribute from VSAC staff, sharing gratitude for volunteers’ tireless dedication

  • Thoughtful volunteer appreciation gifts to show just how much they are valued

  • “The Great VSAC Bake Off” – a cookie decorating contest judged by three of our new SART volunteers, complete with colorful frosting and some playful cookie sabotage!

  • A taco bar dinner from Little Piggy Catering, paired with homemade cupcakes baked with love by our Volunteer Coordinator

But beyond the cookies and tacos, the evening was a chance for volunteers to connect, share stories, and strengthen the caring community that fuels our work every day.

Honouring the Impact of Our Volunteers

Volunteering at VSAC isn’t just giving time—it’s giving heart, compassion, and care. Riven, our Volunteer Coordinator, sums it up best:

“This past year, our volunteers have given their time and energy to work that can be emotionally demanding. They’ve done so with care, curiosity, and deep respect for the people we serve. Collectively, and not including the time given by the board, volunteers have given 16,340 hours in 2025 – this includes tabling at events, SART and senior SART shifts, time given to survivors on SART responses, ongoing training opportunities, our practicum students’ hours, and folks going through training to volunteer here. Volunteers also balance this volunteering with their own responsibilities and lives, and still choose to show up to end gender-based and sexualized violence and support survivors, and that choice matters. We want to express how deeply grateful we are—not just for what volunteers do, but for how they do it. Their care, consistency, and belief in this work does not go unnoticed.”

Every hour and every shift make a real difference for survivors in Victoria, and the commitment of our volunteers is at the very heart of VSAC.

Thank You, VSAC Volunteers!

To all our volunteers: thank you for showing up, for holding space, and for your unwavering commitment to ending gender-based and sexualized violence. Your care, consistency, and belief in this work are what make VSAC strong—and make Victoria a safer, more supportive

community for survivors.
